Freight Train Baggage Car Pwghs 54 - The Prototype
In the mid-1950s, the steadily increasing freight volume and the aging of baggage cars, some of which dated back to the era of regional railways, led to a significant shortage of freight train baggage cars. Completely refurbishing the old baggage cars proved uneconomical, and new acquisitions were financially unfeasible. The Pwghs 54 was therefore developed based on the Gms 54. This model was not equipped with ventilation hatches but featured a restroom and a conductor's compartment accessible from the end. If needed, these Pwghs 54 could be relatively easily converted into boxcars. By the late 1950s, 1,200 Pwghs 54 were built. Vehicles used in express freight service were marked with a red "E" on a white background on their sides. Only with the increasing use of diesel and electric traction did these baggage cars gradually become obsolete.
In addition to standard features, the Pwghs comes with a decoder featuring USP memory for flicker-free interior and exterior lighting, which can be controlled separately in digital operation.
