The DR was also working on replacing the steam locomotives in the 1950s. A suitable replacement was needed for light to medium passenger and freight train and shunting services, which had previously been performed by steam locomotives of the 38, 55, 57, 78 and 93 series. The V 100 was designed for this purpose, originally with 1,000 hp. From 1970, the locomotives were categorised as class 110 (later also class 108 with 1,020 hp). In the 1980s, the locomotives were fitted with more powerful engines: Class 112 with 1,100 hp and Class 114 with 1,500 hp. Incidentally, the driving switch was operated using a Trabant steering wheel.
