Model information V 100 - Family
As a further development of the V 80 built in 1952, the first 5 very successful trial machines of the V 100 series for multi-purpose service were built by MaK in 1958. A further 36 pre-series locomotives were delivered in 1961/62. After that, a total of 364 locomotives with a 1,100 hp engine and a maximum speed of 90 km/h were built, also by other manufacturers - later the 211 series.
The 1,100 hp output of the BR 211 (V 100.10) was sufficient for branch lines, but a higher engine output was required for lines with gradients and on main lines. There was already a Daimler 12 cylinder in a test locomotive (V 100 006), on the basis of which the V 100.20 (later renamed BR 212) initially received engines from Daimler with 1,350 hp. Later, some of the 12 cylinders were supplied by MAN, while the majority received Daimler diesels under licence from Maybach.
Of the 381 locomotives built in total, ten were equipped for steep line use in the mid-1960s and classified as V 100 2332 to 2341, the later BR 213. These locomotives were equipped with hydrodynamic brakes and an additional gear oil heat exchanger, for example, which is why the auxiliary diesel was replaced by a battery charger with an external power connection. Some of these BR 213s replaced the BR 94.5 on the Rennsteigbahn, where they are still in use today.
After all of the locomotives in this class were taken out of service until 2005, some models are now back in service after being overhauled: as construction locomotives as well as on museum and private railways.
