VT 98
Rail bus - the role model
It was called the saviour of the branch line, the red hulk or simply the Uerdingen rail bus, because most of the VT 98s were built in the Uerdingen wagon factory. They were powered by two 150 hp Büssing underfloor engines, the same engine used in the Berlin double-decker buses, by the way. The six-speed gearbox was supplied by ZF Friedrichshafen AG. In addition to the VT 98 railcars, there was also the VB 98 trailer coach (some with a luggage compartment) and the VS 98 driving trailer. They were used for passenger train services on branch lines, usually in the combination VT+VB+VS. However, shorter two-car units VT+VS and longer units with up to six carriages were also used.
At the end of the 1980s, the VT 98 (or 798, as it was called from 1968) was gradually replaced by the 628 series, which in turn already has more modern successors such as the Talent.
The models
We supply the rail bus sets as three separate models so that everyone can put together their own favourite combination. Our rail buses are available as Era 3 versions (VT 98, VS 98, VB 98) as well as in the Era 4 version as BR 798 / BR 998.
