BR 94.5 - The role model
With around 1,070 HP, the BR 94.5 (pr T 16.1) tender locomotive was one of the DRG's most powerful shunting and switching locomotives, capable of hauling train masses of up to 1,800 tonnes on level ground and up to 280 tonnes on gradients of 25°. Thanks to the low axle load, it could also be used on lines with a lighter superstructure. The 85-tonne Prussian spring coupler initially travelled at 40 km/h both forwards and backwards (94.2 / T 16), then later (like our 94.5 / T 16.1) at 60 km/h with a reinforced frame. The locomotives were used for heavy shunting and shunting services as well as hauling freight and passenger trains on steep lines; for this purpose, the locomotives were equipped with the Riggenbach back-pressure brake.
